Following an unfortunate accident in his youth, Michael Murphy, the owner of ‘Cluain Cheoil, in Watergrasshill, Co.Cork, converted his farm buildings to a dance-hall, where he holds set-dancing classes and ceilis.

I was fortunate to play with Donie Nolan and Taylors Cross Ceili Band for one of his céilís and so I met Michael Murphy, whose triumph over adversity inspired me to write these 2 polkas, 'Cluain Cheoil' and 'A Hooley in the Barn'. I hope this arrangement evokes the strength of his spirit as well as the fun, gaiety and joy which are a feature of Cluain Cheoil hooleys.
